Adventures to Mazan
During the months of May and June of this year a
group of individuals from the
area, under the leadership of Sue O'Riley spent a couple of weeks in Mazan.
Sue has been visiting oppressed areas in Central and South America for
seven
years. She normally is accompanied by high school and college students.
These
are not vacation trips but rather she is carrying on a project that she started
a
few years ago - The Rural Literacy
Project.
Through this work she introduces the people of
remote areas to the wonders of
reading and has started and supplied libraries in several communities. Her
work
goes beyond libraries by interaction with the youth and offering short courses
in
reading and other subjects of interest.
This work has taken her to such places as
Honduras, Nicaragua, Bolivia, and Peru.
Her trips to Peru were prompted by discussions with parishioners of Saints
Patrick
and Raphael Parish concerning the sister parish of Santa Rosa, which she
has
visited on three occasions.
During this recent visit she and her companions
taught reading groups, chess,
and helped in the serving of the sick and elderly. They also brought along
on
the trip many sewing and school supplies for the children and women of the
parish there to use.
Sue was kind enough to provide us with a few
pictures taken while there. The
pictures of the missionaries are the only ones that we have. Some
pertinent
photos follow:
