The Food
Pantry - Getting Ready for Thanksgiving
On Saturday Morning, November 17, parishioners gathered to
pack boxes for
delivery to those in need of aid to celebrate Thanksgiving. During the days
earlier
in the week others filled tables in the parish hall from the shelves in the
"pantry"
and shopping was done at the local markets to complete the needs.
The magnitude of this effort can be shown by examinig some
numbers currently
available. There were just about 100 customers serviced, with
each receiving
between 25 and 100 pounds of items. If we assume the average to be 40lbs,
(no
not a mathematical average) this would yield 4000 pounds or two tons of
food and
other items handled and issued for this one holiday. All who have
contributed are greatly appreciated.
This Saturday was a repeat of many previous years - almost. It
was the
last one under the direction of our Carol Demayo, who has completed more than
25 years
as the founder and the director of the "Food Pantry". This has been a
most
demanding position, requiring limitless hours of boundless energy. Carol has
decided to retire at
the end of this year.
Saturday was a sad day as was shown by the tears occasionally
seen running
down her cheeks, as hugs were exchanged, flowers presented, and kind words
expressed by all. Through all of this, Carol continued to inventory all requests
and insure that all in need were cared for. Boxes were labeled, new
requests
handled, questions answered, new help directed, and on and on. Rather amazing.
This card below says it all. The one(s) who made it is/are not known to the
photographer.
